A Simple Guide to Deeper Word Study

Whether you are studying the Bible with a group, spending quiet time alone with God’s Word, or simply reading a daily verse, there are moments when one word seems to stand out. When that happens, it is often an invitation to pause—to Selah, a Hebrew word that appears frequently in the Bible and carries the sense of stopping to reflect—and look a little deeper. In Luke 5:4, Jesus told Simon to put out into deeper water and let down the nets for a catch. Though there was resistance at first, obedience led to amazement when they gathered a great number of fish. In the same way, when God invites us to go deeper into His Word, what may first feel uncertain can open into unexpected abundance. Being intentional and exploring that word can help give a better insight into the passage, see the context more clearly, and grow in your understanding of Scripture. So go deep.

One helpful resource to support this kind of study is Bible Hub, which can make it easier to dig into meanings, context, and connections as you learn. It is a free resource used for researching Greek/Hebrew words.

  • Enter in a scripture such as Genesis 1:2 where you will find the word Spirit.
  • Choose Lexicon.
  • Scroll down to #7307 Ruach (Hebrew).

As you reflect on the many descriptions of the Spirit, discern the different ways the Spirit is described, and notice which words fit. For me, the words inspire, produces, wind, breath, life force, imparting, motive and transforming was fitting. Each one feels a little different, but together they paint a picture of the Spirit of God active, moving and continually working during Creation. Next, arrange those descriptive words in vertical columns into SPIRIT. Let each word deepen your knowledge on God’s ways and who He is recognizing how He remains present and at work within you.
